The future of the EU
The EU's watchdog wants to become the new equivalent of the SEC

The EU's supervisory authority for the financial markets wants to be given greater powers to supervise the stock exchanges and the financial infrastructure. As a European version of the US financial inspection agency SEC, writes the Financial Times.

"There is clearly an appetite" at the European Commission to centralize supervision and speed up the burdened capital market, says Verena Ross, chair of the EU's supervisory authority Esma, to the newspaper.

The process could begin with Esma monitoring the larger exchanges such as Euronext and Detusche Börse, she says.

ECB vs inflation
ECB summit: May have to lower interest rates below "natural" level

The ECB may need to cut interest rates below the "natural level" of 2-3 percent, member Gediminas Šimkus said on Monday, according to Reuters.

- If the disinflation processes become permanent, it is possible that interest rates will be lower.

Last week, the central bank cut interest rates by 0.25 percentage points. At the same time, the debate among the members has turned to be less about fighting inflation and more about supporting the increasingly sluggish economy, sources told Reuters.

WSJ: Increasingly common with "homegrown" on Wall Street

It has become increasingly common for female top executives on Wall Street to have a husband who takes care of the household, writes the Wall Street Journal.

In the harsh working climate that requires long hours, work trips and availability around the clock, it is difficult to reconcile family with the profession.

- Almost everyone in the top positions has a partner who stays at home, says Suzanne Donohoe, who was a partner at Goldman Sachs and KKR.

In 45 percent of heterosexual marriages in the United States, the wife earns as much or more than her husband, a share that has roughly tripled over the past 50 years, according to a 2023 Pew Research Center report, the newspaper writes.
