All convictions and charges against those who participated in the storming of the Capitol in Washington, DC have now been dismissed.

A federal judge in the US capital has, against his will, dismissed all remaining cases related to the riot on January 6, 2021.

Judge Amit Mehta follows the Justice Department's decision from April to dismiss all convictions, but writes in a statement that he had no choice and that his action means erasing "criminal acts that caused centuries of democratic foundations to give way".

More than 1,500 people involved in the deadly storming were pardoned by Donald Trump on the first day of his second presidential term.
