Painting stolen by Nazis to be returned from Argentina

A painting from the 18th century - which was stolen by the Nazis and was found hanging in a living room in Mar del Plata last year - is to be sent home from Argentina.

A judge ruled on Friday that the painting should be returned to its rightful owner, the heiress of Jewish art dealer Jacques Goudstikker, daughter-in-law Marei von Saher, reports Argentine daily Clarín.

“Portrait of a Woman,” painted in the 1730s by Giuseppe Ghislandi, was one of many works of art stolen by Nazi Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring from Goudstikker. After being missing for 80 years, the painting was discovered in 2025 – in a photo in a real estate advertisement for a home belonging to the daughter of SS man Friedrich Kadgien.

Kadgien was an economic advisor to Göring and fled to South America after World War II, dying in Argentina in 1978.
