The fires in Canada have already broken year-round records
Forest fires in Canada have released 290 million tonnes of carbon dioxide this year. That is twice as much as the previous all-year record, according to the EU's Earth observation program Copernicus.
Around 131,000 square kilometers of forest have burned down this year, corresponding to the entire surface of Greece, according to Reuters. The hot and dry season is not over, so the fires are expected to continue.
Climate change has increased the number and scale of extreme weather-related events in Canada, which is one of the fastest-warming regions in the world, writes The Guardian.
