Political situation in Thailand

The former prime minister will be released on Sunday

Thailand's former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will be released from prison on Sunday, several media reports.

The information is confirmed by the country's current Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.

Shinawatra was arrested when he returned to Thailand last year, after 14 years in self-imposed exile.

His return to Thailand at the same time as his former party took over government power alongside military-controlled parties was seen by many observers as a sign that Shinwatra had struck some kind of deal that would limit his time in prison.

Shinawatra is convicted of abuse of power during his tenure as prime minister, which ended when he was ousted in a military coup in 2006.

BREAKING: PM Srettha Thavisin said on Saturday inmate Thaksin Shinwatra will be released on parole from Police Hospital tomorrow, February 18. Srettha wouldn't say what time the ex premier will be discharged.
He added he hasn't thought about appointing Thaksin to assist him yet because Thaksin is ill.
Pravit Rojanaphruk's take: What role will #Thaksin play now? Will he behave privately as de facto PM, de facto boss of PM #Srettha, quietly direct national policies in private or very publicly through social media posts? #Thailand #whatshappeningThailand #ทักษิณ
