Shinawatra is home – for the first time in 15 years
Thailand's former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has, as expected, been released from prison on Sunday. This is reported by several media.
The 74-year-old was seen arriving at the family residence in Bangkok in a car with daughter Paetongtarn.
Shinawatra is thus a free man in Thailand for the first time in almost 15 years. In 2006, the then prime minister was deposed in a military coup, and has been in self-imposed exile in, among other places, Dubai since 2008, ostensibly to avoid a prison sentence following a conviction for abuse of power.
Despite that, Thaksin Shinawatra has continued to be an important player in Thai politics, writes AFP.
Aim Pinthongtha Shinawatra Kunakornwong, the daughter of Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra, the former prime minister, shared a photo of her father relaxing in Ban Chan Song La with the message ”My Fighter“ and ”When I looked at my father sitting quietly, it had tens of billions of words.” #Thailand #ThaksinShinawatra
Deputy
PM Anutin Charnveerakul said on Sunday he will soon go to see his
"former boss" Thaksin Shinwatra at the ex premier's residence to pay
respect, now that Thaksin has been released on parole. Anutin, who’s
also Interior Minister, discounted talks the the centre of political
power will now shift from the Government House to the Mansion of the
Shining Moon, or Thaksin's residence, adding anyone could say anything. #Thailand #WhatsHappeningInThailand #Thaksin #ทักษิณ #ทักษิฯกลับบ้าน
