Europe needs to become more independent, both militarily and in terms of energy and trade, urges EU President Ursula von der Leyen.

The EU Commission President does not mention the US and President Donald Trump on her way to today's summit in Armenia within the so-called EPC cooperation. It is nevertheless clear that her words are a response to Trump's latest statements about new EU tariffs and withdrawn US soldiers.

- We will mainly discuss the topic of "an independent Europe". We must increase our military capacity so that we can defend ourselves, says von der Leyen, among other things.

The EPC brings together all countries in Europe except Russia, Belarus and the Vatican City, and in Armenia, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is also participating as a specially invited guest.

Sweden, however, is not participating in today's meeting, as are Denmark and the Netherlands, among others.
