Hamas appoints Yahya Sinwar as new leader after Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran.
This is reported by the Reuters news agency and refers to a statement from Hamas.
Sinwar is notorious, among other things, for violently punishing people who collaborated with Israel or committed immorality.
It has earned him the nickname "The Butcher of Khan Yunis".
Sinwar has previously been Hama's political leader in the Gaza Strip.
Suspected of being behind October 7
In 1989 he was sentenced to four life sentences for the murder of two Israeli soldiers as well as four Palestinian "collaborators".In the interrogations, he told that he preferred to kill the people with his own hands instead of with firearms.
Sinwar and the now-dead military leader Mohammad Dayf are believed to be the men behind the October 7 attack.
