Spain sterilizes mosquitoes to stop dengue fever
A lab in the Spanish city of Valencia is breeding and sterilizing thousands of tiger mosquitoes to fight dengue fever, The Guardian reports.
Every week, 45,000 sterilized tiger mosquitoes are released into parks in the city to mate with other mosquitoes. Since the animals cannot reproduce, the population decreases in the long run.
- It is a species that is becoming more and more common as a result of climate change. There is a favorable environment for most of the year and the population is constantly increasing, says Vicente Dalmau of Valencia's Department of Health.
The World Health Organization has warned that dengue fever is increasing globally. The tiger mosquito has so far established itself in 13 European countries, including Spain, France and Greece.
