Greek delight: Many egg pits from turtles

The number of egg pits from sea turtles on the Greek island of Zakynthos has broken a record, The Guardian reports. In addition, the number of newly hatched baby turtles is also the highest on record.

- The message from the sea turtles is clear. The measures we have taken over the past 25 years to improve the conditions for the turtles' nests are working. It's fantastic, says Charikleia Minotou at WWF.

The loggerhead turtle species is believed to be over 100 million years old. They move over large areas during their lifetime but adult females always return to their birthplace to lay eggs. Females that were tagged by conservationists a quarter of a century ago are now returning to the shores of Zakynthos.

This year, more than 1,200 egg pits have been recorded on Sekania Beach in Zakynthos - "an incredible number", according to Minotou.
