Sources: Israel has informed the US of "imminent" ground invasion

Israel has informed the US that it is preparing a "limited ground invasion" in Lebanon that could start "immediately". This is stated by sources for the Washington Post.

According to the sources, the invasion would be smaller than Israel's offensive against Lebanon in 2006 and focus on "wiping out" the Hezbollah militia infrastructure closest to the Israeli border.

New Hezbollah leader: "We are ready for ground invasion"

Hezbollah is ready to face an Israeli ground invasion of Lebanon. This is stated by the terrorist-classified group's acting leader, Naim Qassem, according to Reuters.

- We are ready if the Israelis decide to enter by land and the resistance forces are ready for ground combat.

It is the first time Qassem has spoken out since succeeding Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Friday.

Israel has stated that it has prepared plans for a ground invasion, but has not yet confirmed if or when one will be launched.

Hezbollah: New leader to be appointed as soon as possible

Naim Qassem, deputy leader of Hezbollah, says that a new leader of the militia group should be appointed at the "earliest possible opportunity".

He says so in a speech on the Shia Muslim group's own television channel al-Manar, reports AFP.

Qassem says the new leader will be chosen based on "Hezbollah's internal mechanisms" and that the election will be "clear and unanimous."

- Rest assured, victory is our friend, we just need a little patience, he also says.

The speech is the first of its kind since Hezbollah's top leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed on Friday.

Naim Qassem, 71, was involved in Hezbollah's founding in the 1980s. He has been secretary general of the group since 1991.
