Political situation in Argentina

More than every other person lives in poverty in Argentina

Over half of Argentina's population now lives below the poverty line, writes the BBC. In the first six months of the year, the figure grew to 52.9 percent of the population, compared to 41.7 percent in the second half of 2023, according to official statistics.

Markets have praised libertarian President Javier Milei's public spending cuts to bring down the budget deficit. But they have weakened the economy in the short term, writes CNN.

- Since the government took power, the jobs have disappeared, says 53-year-old Irma Casal, who has three different jobs, to the channel.

At the same time, assessors believe that the economy looks to be on the way to turning around again as a result of Milei's reforms, writes CNN.

"Since the government took power, the jobs have disappeared"

The fact that more than half of Argentina's population now lives below the poverty line is due to the populist policies of the former left-wing government. That's what government spokesman Manuel Adorni says, according to the BBC.

He believes that President Javier Milei's government inherited a "catastrophic situation" last December.

- Perhaps one of the worst that a government has had to take over in history, says Adorni.

53-year-old Irma Casal, who works three different jobs to support herself, disagrees.

- Since the government took power, the jobs have disappeared, she tells CNN.
