15 dead at gold mine in Sumatra - buried in mud

At least 15 people have died and dozens are buried under mud after a landslide at an illegal gold mine in West Sumatra. This is reported by Sky News.

Locals were digging for gold when masses of earth came down on them from nearby hills and buried them. Three people could be exhumed alive. Rescue efforts in the worst-hit area were delayed by mud, power outages and problems with telephony.

- The affected mining area can only be reached on foot and it takes four hours from the nearest community, says Ilham Wahab at the local emergency preparedness authority.

Heavy rains caused the landslide, AP writes.
