China: Routine test - no change in nuclear strategy
China's test-fire of an intercontinental ballistic missile was "legitimate and routine". This is according to Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for China's Ministry of Defense, writes AFP.
- The aim is to test our weapon capacity and performance. It is a legitimate and routine measure for military training, Zhang said at a press conference.
China's test firing, which was the first of its kind in over 40 years, has drawn criticism from several neighboring countries. According to Zhang, this does not mean any change in the country's nuclear weapons policy.
- We strictly adhere to a nuclear policy of not using nuclear weapons first and pursue a nuclear strategy for self-defense, Zhang says.

The robot landed "not far" from French Polynesia
The ballistic robot that China test-fired on Wednesday landed in the Pacific Ocean, "not far from" the economic zone belonging to French Polynesia. This is what the president of the island group, Moetai Brotherson, told AFP.
The French High Commission states in a statement that China gave advance warning before test-firing the robot. Even the Pentagon says that the US received advance information that the test was underway.
However, neither Australia nor New Zealand should have received any warnings. Yesterday, New Zealand called China's test firing an "unwelcome and worrying development".
Yesterday's test firing was the first known from the Chinese side since 1980.
