The violence in Haiti

More and more on the run: "Not even a dog would sleep here"

Haiti's capital has become a city of refugee camps, after criminal gangs took control of more than 80 percent, forcing tens of thousands to flee their homes. The Haitian Times reports.

- The place where I sleep is a place where not even a dog would want to sleep, says a 60-year-old woman to the newspaper. She lives in a refugee camp on the outskirts of the city along with thousands of others after a gang raid on her residential area earlier this year.

Haiti's hospitals and schools are overloaded to the breaking point, and in the refugee camps, many lack access to basic hygiene facilities.

- The security situation has paralyzed everything. People can't work. Children cannot go to school. Farmers can't even sell their crops, says Géraldine Edmond, director of a refugee camp in Port-au-Prince to the newspaper.

UN extends mandate of international police in Haiti

The UN Security Council has extended the international security force in Haiti for another year. Reuters reports.

The force is led by Kenya and is staffed primarily by police officers from the country. The purpose is to fight the criminal gangs that control large parts of Haiti.

According to the news agency, the force's 400 members have so far had no major successes in fighting crime.
