Orbán adviser: Irresponsible for Ukraine to defend itself

One of the advisers to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán says that Ukraine is irresponsible in defending itself against Russia's invasion, AFP reports.

The adviser, named Balázs Orbán, also says that Hungary would not defend itself in the way that Ukraine has done. He refers to the anti-Soviet revolution of 1956, which the Soviets put down by force.

- Based on 1956, we would not have done what Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi did two and a half years ago, he says, adding that many have died and that Ukraine has lost territory.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine is considered a violation of international law. Through its war of invasion, Moscow has caused hundreds of thousands of deaths on both sides.

Biden approves new aid package for Ukraine

The United States has approved a new military aid package to Ukraine worth nearly $8 billion, President Joe Biden said in a statement on the White House website.

Biden also says that the United States will provide Ukraine with long-range munitions "to improve Ukraine's long-range strike capability." In addition, the United States is sending additional ammunition to the American Patriot air defense robotic system.

However, the statement contains nothing new about possible eased restrictions on Ukraine using US long-range weapons against targets inside Russia – an issue high on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi's wish list.

Zelenskyy says that the US's new support will help the country "achieve victory".

Zelenskyy is in the US to meet with Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris at the White House later today.

Sources: The plan contains nothing new - "not impressed"

President Volodymyr Zelensky's peace plan does not include a clear approach to how Ukraine will defeat Russia. This is stated by several American and European government sources for the Wall Street Journal.

- I am not impressed, there is not much new there, says one of the newspaper's sources who has knowledge of the main features of the peace plan.

According to the WSJ, the Biden administration is concerned that Zelensky's plan lacks a comprehensive strategy for how to win the war and that it will appear mostly as a repackaged request for more weapons.

Zelenskyy is to present his peace plan to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris at the White House this evening.
