South Korea's birth rate

South Korea's child crisis increases - dog strollers most popular

The sale of dog strollers in South Korea has surpassed the sale of baby strollers, writes the Wall Street Journal, which refers to figures from the online retailer GMarket. More and more South Koreans are acquiring pets, but the figures represent a break in trend and, according to the newspaper, make clear the low birth rate in the country.

President Yoon Suk Yeol believes that it is a demographic "emergency" and that what people experience as uncomfortable in everyday life must be resolved. He believes that economic development is an important factor.

- Company growth and job creation are also important.

South Korea has the lowest birth rate in the world.

The 24-year-old: "I'd rather spend money on my dog"

Every second South Korean woman between 20 and 49 has no intention of having children, writes the Wall Street Journal in an article about the country's record low birth rate.

The newspaper has spoken to 24-year-old Kang Seung-min who, like many others in the country, prefers pets to children. She neither wants to get married nor have children.

- I'd rather spend money on my dog.

32-year-old Kim Bora has not yet considered having children, because it is so costly. At the moment, she wants to focus on her bichon frize Salgu.

- If I had had children, I wouldn't be able to take care of Salgu as much as I do now.

President Yoon Suk Yeol calls the situation a "demographic emergency", but has some uphill battle in convincing the citizens, the newspaper writes. He himself is childless but has ten dogs and cats.
