The election in the United States|The debate

Fierce atmosphere when Donald Trump and Kamala Harris met in the first debate

The atmosphere quickly became fierce when Kamala Harris and Donald Trump met last night in a first debate before the presidential election in November.

The candidates, who had never met before, started by shaking hands but then the attacks rained down.

Among other things, Trump accused Harris of copying Biden's policies and of destroying the United States. Harris, in turn, said Trump is willing to abandon Ukraine and said world leaders are calling him a "disgrace."

The candidates had time to discuss substantive political issues such as the economy, abortion and migration. The war in Ukraine, the 2020 election results and the assassination attempt against Trump were also brought up.

Trump falsely claimed that Haitian migrants in Ohio eat pets and that Democrats, in some states, allow abortion after the baby is born. Trump was then reprimanded by the moderator, who pointed out that no state in the United States allows such a thing.

Robert Speel, a professor of political science at Penn State Erie, told TT that Harris was "more aggressive" than expected and that it angered Trump, which probably didn't help him.

The debate was the only one scheduled before the November election and has been described as potentially decisive for the election campaign. It can be seen afterwards in the player below or in SVT Play.

Trump and Harris in the debate.Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump lied over 30 times during the night's debate, according to a preliminary tally by CNN. According to the same compilation, Kamala Harris lied once but she made some statements that were misleading and some that were taken out of context.

Here are four of the debate's false claims.
Trump claimed in the debate that several states, like Democratic vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz, believe that fetuses can be aborted up to the ninth month - and after birth.

This is false. Killing newborn babies is criminalized throughout the country. Walz has never said he supports such a thing either. A handful of states allow abortion throughout pregnancy, but only in cases of serious health risks to the mother or fatal fetal abnormalities.

Trump: Migrants eat pets

Trump also claimed that Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio, are eating people's dogs and cats.

This is false. There are no reliable reports or specific allegations of pet eating, according to local police and city officials.

Harris: Trump left behind the worst unemployment rate since the Great Depression

Harris claimed Trump left the White House with record-high US unemployment — the highest since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

This is false.. Unemployment was at 6.4 percent when Trump handed over to Joe Biden in January 2021, compared to 14.8 percent during the pandemic year before.Trump claimed that Harris met with Russian President Vladimir Putin for peace talks three days before Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

This is false. Harris met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the days before the full-scale invasion, but Putin was not present.Just an hour after the night's big debate between the presidential candidates, Kamala Harris' campaign threw out the question of another debate, writes ABC News.

In an email, the campaign proposes a debate in October.

“Vice President Harris is ready for a second debate. Is it Donald Trump?” it reads.

When the ABC reporter brings up the request during an interview with Trump, he does not answer if he wants to participate in a second debate.

- It's because she lost last night, very big, he says.

Previously, Fox News has proposed a second debate in October and sent requests to both campaigns, writes Reuters.
