The future of the EU

Orbán wanted to convince the EU of change – were sleeping pills

In a speech in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Hungary's Viktor Orbán said that Europe must "change". This is reported by several media.

- The EU must change and I want to convince you of that today, Orbán said. The TT news agency describes the Hungarian Prime Minister's tone as so "restrained and withdrawn" that one of the correspondent's colleagues fell asleep during the speech.

Among other things, Orbán talked about the fact that the EU's migration management must be handled outside of Europe and about the need for increased competitiveness. At the same time, the message was less drastic than before, for example in the matter of the EU's climate measures, TT writes.

Activist threw bills at Orbán: "Sold out to Putin"

Sharp criticism and a rain of fake bills met Viktor Orbán in the European Parliament after his speech about Hungary's ongoing EU presidency, the news agencies report.

A Hungarian local opposition politician, Márton Gyekiczki, threw a wad of banknotes at Orbán and shouted:

- He has sold out to Putin and Xi, before he was taken away by security guards, according to AP.

Among other things, Orbán was criticized by the members of parliament for his trip to Moscow this summer and for the lack of protection for LGBTQ people in Hungary. Swedish Alice Bah Kuhnke (MP) called him "anti-democrat" and "dictator".

Orbán dismissed all criticism as "left-wing lies and political propaganda".
