Irritation in the US - Israel does not share plans: "Excuse me?"

Frustration is growing in the Biden administration that Israel is not sharing its plans for how the country will retaliate against Iran, reports The Wall Street Journal, citing sources.

The irritation has been building since Israel killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, without giving the US a warning. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, in a conversation with his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant, is said to have said "Excuse me, what did you say?" when he was informed of the attack.

In a further subsequent conversation, Austin is said to have asked Gallant if Israel is ready to defend itself "on its own", given that it does not inform its ally.

US to Israel: Must provide civilians with food and water

The US has made it clear to Israel that the country must assist civilians in Gaza with food, water and other necessities according to international law. This is stated by the US State Department in a statement after the conversation between President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, writes Reuters.

According to the US spokesperson, the conversation about the "extremely worrying" humanitarian situation in Gaza was urgent, especially in northern Gaza where Israel has been conducting an offensive for five days. The offensive in Lebanon was also discussed.

- The situation in Lebanon must not become like in Gaza, that would be unacceptable, says US spokesperson Matthew Miller.

Erdogan turns up the rhetoric against Israel: "Terror"

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan calls Israel a "Zionist terrorist organization" and refers to Israel's attacks in Gaza and Lebanon, reports Reuters. He also repeats his criticism of the West's support for Israel and singles out the United States in particular.

The Israeli Times of Israel writes that it is an escalation compared to Erdogan's previous rhetoric.

Residents tie looters to poles in Beirut

Thieves who broke into empty homes whose residents fled Israel's bombings in Beirut have been tied to poles and beaten by angry mobs. This is reported by the Lebanese news site L'Orient Today.

Several videos on social media show bound men with bloody, swollen faces in the suburbs of Ghobeiri and Kafaat. One of them has a handwritten sign around his neck with the text "thief".

- They deserve even worse, a man is heard saying behind the camera.

Many on social media applaud the initiative, while many others question it. One of them writes:

“Should we encourage people to use violence as punishment? This is the Middle Ages!”

Ghobeiri mayor Maan Khalil told L'Orient Today that it is "unacceptable" and that the police and judiciary must act.

Israeli soldiers refuse to proceed without a hostage deal

130 Israeli reservists and conscripts refuse to fight for their country unless a hostage deal is first reached, Haaretz reports. They believe that the Israeli military's offensive in Gaza both delays the return of the hostages and endangers the lives of the captives.

"Many hostages have been killed in IDF attacks - many more than those who have been rescued in military operations," says a letter addressed to ministers and the military's chief of staff.
