The Russian invasion

Putin's new way to fool the West: Flag ships in Gabon

Russia is systematically moving its fleet of oil tankers to Gabon, in order to escape the sanctions imposed on the country in connection with the large-scale invasion of Ukraine. The New York Times reports.

The newspaper writes how the Russian "ghost fleet" is an illustration of Putin's latest cat-and-mouse game with Western authorities. That a new system has taken shape, consisting of companies and countries that are prepared to do transactions with Russia.

The records between Russian companies and their customers are rarely public, so it is not possible to see the extent to which Russian oil has been sold using the reflagged vessels.

Expert: Gabon is an increasingly important partner for the Kremlin

After the 2023 military coup, Gabon's relations with Russia have become increasingly close and comprehensive. The New York Times reports.

Now the country is described as a key ally in Russia's attempts to escape Western sanctions.

- Gabon is important for Russia because the country is willing to register tankers, when other countries want to avoid pressure from the West. It helps Russia develop a shadow fleet that makes it easier for them to sell oil at a price above the price ceiling, says Craig Kennedy, a former investment banker now affiliated with Harvard.

NEW: Putin has been turning Trump on Ukraine for years

Donald Trump's often critical stance on Ukraine and US support can be traced back to 2016 and 2017, at the beginning of his presidency, according to the New York Times.

The paper particularly highlights Trump's first meeting with Putin, held in Hamburg in July 2017. During the meeting, Putin painted Ukraine as a corrupt, made-up country. Trump said his administration was considering giving weapons to Ukraine and asked Putin what he thought — "that would be a mistake," was the Russian president's response.

According to several sources who were present, Trump's then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is said to have come out of the meeting in a huff and said to his colleagues:

- We have to work on getting the president to change his mind about Ukraine.

During a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Trump is said to have also "peppered" him with questions about the Democrats' alleged connections to Ukraine.
