Trump: "We have to have Greenland - we need Greenland"
US President Donald Trump is increasing the pressure on Greenland and Denmark further ahead of Vice President JD Vance's uninvited visit to the island on Friday.
- We need Greenland for international security and protection. We need it. We have to have it, Trump says in a podcast with right-wing conservative Vince Coglianese.
- I hate to put it this way, but we are going to have to have it, Trump continues.
Trump is asked if the Greenlanders are keen to become part of the USA.
- I don't know [...] But we have to convince them because we need this country.
Greenland and Denmark welcome Vance's new travel plan
US Vice President JD Vance will travel to Greenland on Friday with his wife Usha Vance. Despite harsh criticism, the Greenlanders are now relieved that the USA has decided to change its travel plans. The couple will visit a US military base instead of going to the capital Nuuk, according to the Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiag.
– A relief for many, says the newspaper's editor-in-chief Masaana Egede.
Denmark also welcomes the decision.
– I think it is very positive that the Americans canceled their visit to Greenlandic society. Instead, they will visit their own base, Pituffik, and we have no objection to that, says Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, according to Reuters.
