Bolsonaro's hearing on coup attempt in the Supreme Court
Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro answered questions from the Supreme Court on Tuesday following his alleged involvement in the coup attempt after the 2022 election.
He is also accused of spreading fake news, inciting violent protests and conspiring with the military.
Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes emphasized during the hearing that the purpose of the legal process is to defend democratic institutions, reports Telesur TV.
During the hearing, thousands of people gathered outside the court and chanted, among other things, "Out with Bolsonaro."
After Bolsonaro's election loss in the fall of 2022, Bolsonaro's supporters stormed several government buildings and blocked roads in protest against what they claimed was election fraud.
“The biggest political persecution” according to Bolsonaro
Ahead of the hearing of Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro, in the country’s Supreme Court, the protagonist himself took the opportunity to speak out.
– This is the biggest political persecution in Brazil’s history, he said, according to the AFP news agency.
He later wrote on X that “the referee has blown the whistle before the match has even started”.
On Monday, he also appeared in a podcast where he asserted his innocence regarding his involvement in the 2023 coup attempt.
After the hearing, five judges will decide whether Bolsonaro should be put on trial for having directed the coup attempt after the new president Lula da Silva was sworn in.
