Al Jazeera journalist killed – IDF calls him a sniper

Al Jazeera journalist Hussam Shabat was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Jabalia in the Gaza Strip on Monday.

“An execution,” according to the Arabic news site, which condemned the “brutal murder.” In a statement, Al Jazeera writes that it supports all journalists trying to do their job in the Gaza Strip and that all crimes against journalists should lead to prosecution.

Israel has a completely different picture of the incident, writes AFP. The Israeli military IDF says that Shabat was a “sniper terrorist” who was part of Hamas, while at the same time he was employed by Al Jazeera.

The IDF says it has come across documentation that shows that Shabat had “direct links” to the terrorist group’s military wing. The documents are said to show, among other things, that the journalist participated in military exercises with Hamas in 2019, the IDF said.

Israel attacked targets in Syria – risk of escalation

Israel has carried out airstrikes against two military bases in Syria, the Israeli military said on Tuesday morning.

"A short while ago, the Israeli military struck the military capabilities that remain in the Tadmur and T4 military bases," the IDF said in a statement, according to AFP.

The attacks come a day after the EU's foreign policy chief warned that attacks in Syria and Lebanon risk escalating.

Since the Islamist HTS movement overthrew Bashar al-Assad's regime in December, Israel has carried out several hundred attacks on targets on Syrian soil.
