Russian invasion Negotiations

Eight killed in Russian airstrikes ahead of US visit

At least eight people have been killed in Russian airstrikes overnight Sunday, reports Kyiv Independent. The deadly attacks have been reported in the Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions. At least 69 people have also been injured, several of whom are children.

Ukraine has also targeted Russia and fires have been reported in the Russian region of Ryazan, twelve miles northeast of Moscow. According to Bloomberg, the Ukrainian military hit one of Russia's largest oil refineries. Russia's Defense Ministry also states that around 260 drones were destroyed overnight.

The night of the attack comes at the same time as both countries have agreed to a ceasefire in the capitals during the visit of US negotiators Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff. Yesterday they met with Vladimir Putin to present a new peace proposal. On Sunday they will meet Volodymyr Zelenskyj in Kyiv.

But according to Ukrainian media, the ceasefire agreement has not been broken as it only applied to Moscow and Kyiv.

Trump's envoy arrives in Kyiv – Zelenskyj welcomes

American negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have arrived in the Ukrainian capital by train, Ukrainian media report. At the station they were welcomed by the country's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyj.

Donald Trump's envoy is visiting Kyiv less than a day after they were in Moscow for talks with Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin described the talks as "constructive" and "sincere". But it is very unclear whether any concrete decisions were made, for example whether peace negotiations between the countries should resume.

Before the trip, Trump said that Witkoff and Kushner traveled east with a completely new peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine.
