Kremlin: “Frank” talks in Moscow
Talks between the US and Russia on an end to the war in Ukraine are described as constructive. But there is little indication of a breakthrough.
Few details have been made public about what was discussed during the meeting in Moscow between President Vladimir Putin and US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, but according to Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov, the talks were “extremely frank.”
“They did not just express their traditional position on a quick end to hostilities, they put forward a number of ideas on possible paths to an agreement,” Ushakov said after the meeting.
According to Ushakov, Putin highlighted Russia’s “success” on the battlefield and the country’s unchanged position regarding its objectives in the war against Ukraine, the Russian state news agency Tass reports. Putin, as at the beginning of the war in 2022, emphasized Russia’s “need” to “eliminate all the root causes” of the conflict, Tass writes.
Russia currently controls almost a fifth of Ukraine’s territory and claims several regions in eastern Ukraine.
From the American side, the White House writes in a statement that “concrete plans for the next step” have been discussed with the Kremlin, and will be made public in the coming weeks.
On Sunday, Witkoff and Kushner will travel to the Ukrainian capital Kiev for talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyj for the first time since the start of the war in 2022. Zelenskyj writes on his social media that the Ukrainian staff is “ready for substantive talks.”
