ความเห็นของAndrew MacGregor Marshallกับ สุริน พิทสุวัน

I’m sick of all this fake respect for old men who never did anything for fairness or freedom of speech or human rights or democracy in Thailand.

Everybody was so respectful of Samak Sundaravej when he died, and now everybody is rushing to say how great Surin Pitsuwan was.

What did they do for Thai democracy? Nothing.

Dinosaurs like Chuan Leekpai and Anand Panyarachun will be lauded as heroes too, when they die, but actually they are frauds who never helped Thailand at all.

I would rather put my faith in a younger generation of real heroes. Sirikan June Charoensiri, Jatupat Boonpattararaksa, Rangsiman Rome, Sirawith Seritiwat, Apple Kritsuda Kunasean, Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal, the brave lawyers of Nitirat, and many more young Thais who are fighting so bravely to make their country better. Plus older people who really care, and made genuine sacrifices for Thailand:Somsak Jeamteerasakul, Junya Yimprasert, Jaran Ditapichai, Pavin Chachavalpongpun, Chaturon Chaisang, for example.

Condolences for Surin, but he was the past not the future, and he failed to stand up for Thai democracy when it counted.

It’s embarrassing to see all the foreign journalists who have been wrong about Thailand and Myanmar for so many decades rushing to praise him. They still didn’t learn.

Here is my obituary of Surin: he was a superficially nice man who made the indefensible decision to ally with notorious crook Suthep Thaugsuban to subvert Thai democracy. He should have known better. Shame on him. When Thailand needed principled people to stand up for democracy, he failed to do it. Rest in peace and goodbye.
