Increased pressure on Scholz - wants him to "do a Biden"
It is time for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to "do a Biden" and hand over to new forces ahead of the next election, say critics in their own ranks who spoke to the Financial Times.
- We have two possible candidates - one is Germany's most popular politician and the other the least popular, says Maximilian Mumm who is mayor for the SPD in the town of Maifeld.
Scholz, on the other hand, continues to have the support of the management, and will today officially be named the party's candidate, writes AFP.
Last week, opinion polls from Insa showed that Scholz is the least popular of 20 top German politicians.
Most popular was Boris Pistorius.
Scholz remains in office - becomes the SPD's candidate in the election
The German Social Democrats in the SPD will nominate incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz as their candidate in the upcoming election. This is reported by Der Spiegel.
Critics within the party have openly demanded that the unpopular Scholz "do a Biden" and step aside. The youth association's leader Philipp Türmer has been deeply critical of the way the nomination debate was conducted.
Earlier this fall, Scholz announced new elections after his "traffic light coalition" with the Liberals and the Greens collapsed. He still has to be formally named as the SPD's candidate at the party's congress on January 11. However, this is described as a mere formality.
