New meeting between Russia and the US scheduled
Representatives of Russia and the US will meet again within two weeks, according to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov. This is reported by Reuters, citing the Russian state news agency Ria.
The meeting will, just like last time, be organized in a third country. It is still unclear which representatives will participate in the meeting. The relationship between the US and Russia and peace negotiations over Ukraine are on the agenda, according to Ryabkov.
The Kremlin has previously stated that Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump may meet at a meeting this month.
Paasikivi on Starlink threat: Ukraine would be blind
If the US carries out the threat to shut down the Starlink satellite network in Ukraine, the Ukrainians would be "basically blind". This is what military expert Joakim Paasikivi tells SREkot.
- It would be devastating.
Using the satellite connection, Ukraine has successfully managed to strike deep into Russian supply lines. This is putting pressure on the Russian soldiers at the front.
– And Starlink is the entire command system on the Ukrainian side. How to see where the enemy is, how to direct your own units, that is, the target data that Ukraine receives about the location of Russian targets.
Last night, Reuters reported, citing sources, that the United States has threatened to cut off Ukraine's access to Starlink, owned by Elon Musk. This will become a reality unless Ukraine agrees to donate valuable minerals, according to the threat.
Sources: US threatens to shut down Ukraine's internet
American negotiators have threatened Ukraine with shutting down internet access via Elon Musk's Starlink satellite system, three sources told Reuters. To avoid this, Ukraine must give the United States important minerals, according to the threats.
A source says the issue was discussed again when US envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg met with Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday.
– Ukraine is dependent on Starlink. They see it as their north star. Losing Starlink would be a huge setback, the source says.
The internet connection via Starlink is key to the country's drone operations, which are an important part of the defense. Without Starlink, the entire rules of war change, says expert Melinda Harin at the Atlantic Council think tank.
The world's response
Leader: The US cannot be trusted – Europe must invest
The uncertain international situation and the US's new position dominate Saturday's editorial pages.
In Aftonbladet, Daniel Suhonen writes that the US can no longer be trusted, that Europe now stands alone and therefore must think new and invest. Sweden should do like Denmark and quickly create a defense fund to pay for the armament, he believes.
In SvD, Fredrik Johansson is on a similar line. He writes that Europe must now develop its capacity in a number of areas. Among other things, he wants to see increased support for Ukraine, dramatically strengthened European defense capabilities, order in European competitiveness and deepened relations with the UK.
“None of this is easy. Much should have been done a long time ago,” notes Johansson.
DN’s Amanda Sokolnicki wonders if Donald Trump is on the way to transforming the US into a nationalist colonial empire, as he tries to grab Gaza, Greenland and Ukraine’s natural resources.
“Trump’s logic is that of a colonial lord. The beige linen suit has just been exchanged for an orange grinning mask – and the world’s largest military power,” she writes.
US does not mention occupied land in UN proposal
The US has submitted a proposal for a UN resolution on Ukraine that does not mention the Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia, according to information provided to AFP.
The proposal is not similar to the one put forward by Ukraine and European countries. It singles out Russia as responsible for the war while protecting Ukraine’s “territorial integrity.” The US proposal calls for “a speedy end to the conflict,” but makes no mention of territorial integrity.
“The US has proposed a simple, historic resolution at the UN that we urge all member states to support,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement.
Russia’s UN ambassador welcomes the US proposal.
