Russian invasion

The world's response
Orbán: Will not allow Ukrainian membership in the EU

Hungarian leader Viktor Orbán gave a speech on Saturday about the situation in the country, several media outlets report.

The conservative prime minister talked about, among other things, that he does not want to see a pride parade in the capital Budapest this year, that he wants to exempt women who have at least two children from taxes and that he may be ready to strangle the profits of grocery stores to overcome high food prices.

The friend of Moscow also said that he will never allow Ukrainian membership in the EU.

– Ukraine, or what is left of it, will once again become a buffer zone. They will not become a member of NATO. But will they become a member of the EU?

– Ukraine will never become a member of the EU at the expense of Hungary and the Hungarian people, he answered his own question.

Negotiations
Source: Zelensky not ready to sign agreement with US

Kyiv is not ready to sign the agreement to provide rare earth metals to the US in exchange for military support. This is stated by a centrally placed Ukrainian source for AFP.

President Donald Trump has pressured his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky to sign the agreement. Zelensky has responded that he does not want to sign an agreement that means he is “selling out” his country.

– The president is not ready to sign the agreement in its current form. We are still trying to make changes and add constructiveness, says the news agency’s source.

Trump’s inauguration means an end to Joe Biden’s “unconditional support” for Ukraine. Trump has said that he wants access to rare earth minerals worth $500 billion.

US: Protecting Ukraine and US taxpayers

Much of what has been reported about the proposed agreement that the US has put on Volodymyr Zelensky's table is incorrect. This is what US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent writes in an opinion piece in the Financial Times.

He writes that what the US has proposed is that Ukraine should allocate revenues from natural resources, infrastructure and other assets to a fund focused on the reconstruction and development of Ukraine. The US would have economic and governance rights in these future investments.

He writes that Ukraine's future prospects without US support are "dangerous at best".

"The economic partnership will protect the Ukrainian people and the US taxpayer", he writes.

Donald Trump has said that he wants to get $500 billion in exchange for the aid the US has already offered Ukraine. Zelensky has said that he does not want to sign an agreement that means he is "selling his country".

Musk on internet shutdown in Ukraine: “Not true”

That the US has threatened to shut down Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite system in Ukraine if Zelensky does not sign the agreement on rare earth metals is not true. The tech billionaire writes this on his own platform X.

“That is not true. Reuters is lying,” he writes.

Three sources told the news agency this morning about the threat. Elon Musk provided Ukraine with the internet system at the beginning of the war. Ukraine relies on it, among other things, to be able to use its drones.
