SOLLEFTEÅ. The future of the city's hospital will be decided within a few weeks.

Now thousands are gathering to protest against the new plans for cuts.

- We are here today because all children have the right to life, says Linnea Karlström, 42, a nurse in the children's ward.

Thousands of Sollefteå residents have gathered to demonstrate against the proposals for cuts to Sollefteå hospital. The intensive care unit, orthopedics, anesthesia and surgeries, as well as pediatric and adolescent medicine are proposed to disappear. This would involve nearly 150 positions.

Kajsa Dovstad, a ST doctor in internal medicine at Sollefteå Hospital, has collected over 16,500 signatures against the cuts, explaining that she is particularly concerned about what will happen if all anesthesia staff are removed.

– This means that we will not be able to help acutely ill patients who need more time-critical care. I would be surprised if this does not lead to deaths, says Kajsa Dovstad.

– We are doing this because we are worried about what these cuts will do to the patients.

“It affects just about everyone”

The protesters walk on the bridge over the Ångermanälven and then gather outside the hospital. Several people, including Kajsa Dovstad, give speeches there. The artist Sara Varga is also present, performing a song.

The turnout is large and several Sollefteå residents describe how a cutback in the hospital affects just about everyone who lives and works here. Both adults and children are participating in the march, many with signs, banners and blue balloons from the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

“We are here today because all children have the right to life,” says Linnea Karlström, 42, a nurse in the children's ward.

If the closure is carried out, she will also lose her job.

“They probably expect us to move to Örnsköldsvik or Sundsvall, but we won't do that. Then I will change lanes instead,” says Linnea Karlström.
