Trump and Putin's meeting is canceled

Updated 20.33 | Published 18.15

The talks between the superpowers have collapsed.

Trump and Putin's planned meeting in Budapest has been canceled, according to The Telegraph.

The announcement came on Tuesday evening:

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will no longer meet in Budapest.

A White House official told The Telegraph that there are no longer any plans for the presidents to meet "in the near future".

It was after a phone call between the presidents last week that Trump came out and said that a meeting was planned in Budapest "in the near future".

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was quick to welcome the presidents and said that Hungary was ready to host the meeting: “Hungary is an island of peace,” the prime minister added on X.

But now it seems that the plans have come to an abrupt end.

The announcement comes after Foreign Ministers Marco Rubio and Sergei Lavrov spoke by phone on Tuesday.

According to The Telegraph, it was Russia that canceled. The reason was reportedly differences of opinion over a possible ceasefire.

“I guess the Russians wanted too much and it became obvious to the Americans that there would be no deal for Trump in Budapest,” a diplomat with insight told Reuters after the conversation.

Lavrov himself says that Russia is only interested in “long-term, sustainable peace” and points out that freezing the front lines would only lead to a temporary halt in the fighting, the BBC reports.

Reports: Kyiv and Europe develop peace plan

In parallel with the canceled meeting plans, reports are coming that Ukraine and allied countries in Europe are developing a 12-point peace plan. This is according to Bloomberg, which refers to sources with insight.

The 12-step plan is that both Russia and Ukraine freeze their front lines, as well as receive security guarantees, war reparations and be offered EU membership.

This is while Donald Trump steps in as chairman of a "peace commission" with the task of ensuring that the plan is followed.

According to Bloomberg, sanctions against Russia will also be withdrawn in stages.

Bloomberg's sources say that intensive work will be done in the coming days to get the US to support the new plan.

Among other things, European diplomats will fly to Washington for crucial meetings later this week, according to the information.

The plan contains several parts that Russia previously said no to.

Samtalen mellan stormakterna har kollapsat.

Trump och Putins planerade möte i Budapest har ställts in, enligt The Telegraph.

Beskedet kom under tisdagskvällen:
