Colorado City Tests AI Wildfire Warning

The city of Vail, Colorado, is one of the first to test a new AI system that will be able to detect wildfires, writes The Verge.

The system is fed with video footage from cameras already installed in connection with businesses and on buses. That footage is then analyzed for signs of fires.

Climate change has made fires in the area increasingly common, and detecting them earlier can make a big difference for rescue and extinguishing work.

– Fires have become a part of our lives here in the mountains, and we have to be prepared, says City Manager Russell Forrest.

Hurricane Melissa
After Melissa's progress: "The destruction is enormous"

Monster Hurricane Melissa has passed by the Caribbean islands but left destruction and death in its wake. In Haiti, which has been underreported, at least 25 people have died in catastrophic flash floods, reports the AP.

In Cuba, no deaths have been reported, but ahead of Melissa's arrival, more than 735,000 people were evacuated on the eastern half of the island.

In Jamaica, at least four people have died, and large parts of the country are still without power. About 25,000 people are still in temporary shelters.

- The destruction is enormous, says Jamaica's Minister of Transport Daryl Vaz.

Many homes have been completely destroyed, and in the town of Black River, 90 percent of the houses have lost their roofs.

- Black River is what you could describe as ground zero, says Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

Five people arrested for the jewel heist at the Louvre

Five people have been arrested on suspicion of having been involved in the jewel heist at the Louvre, reports RTL.

The arrests took place late on Wednesday evening in the capital Paris.

According to information provided to BFMTV, one of those arrested was part of the so-called “Louvre Commando” and was reportedly present when the jewels were stolen.

Two men were arrested earlier this week and partially confessed to their involvement in the robbery on Wednesday.

Some of the jewels have not yet been found.
