After Deadly Attacks: Ceasefire Resumes

After the Israeli attacks on Gaza, which began on Tuesday and continued into Wednesday morning, the IDF says the ceasefire has now resumed, several media outlets report.

At least 104 people have been killed during the attacks, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, Reuters reports.

The attacks were ordered by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after Israeli troops were fired upon in southern Gaza on Tuesday. Israel has accused Hamas of being behind the attack, which in a statement denied involvement and said it had nothing to do with the shootings, writes Haaretz.

At least 100 killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza

At least 104 people have been killed overnight in new waves of Israeli attacks on Gaza that began late on Tuesday, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, Reuters reports.

Israel's prime minister ordered "forceful attacks" after claiming that Hamas had violated the ceasefire after Israeli military was shelled in southern Gaza. In response, Hamas has paused the return of the dead hostage.

The death toll in Gaza

The information on the number of deaths in this text comes from the Gaza Health Authority. The authority is under the Hamas-led government in Gaza, which means that the figures have sometimes been questioned. The authority employs medically trained staff and historically the death toll has largely been consistent with independent assessments from, among others, the UN and Human Rights Watch.

The death toll is derived using reports from hospitals and morgues. The methodology has been criticized for risking both under- and over-estimation, including because hospitals have been destroyed, some dead could not be identified, and because the authority does not distinguish between combatants and civilians. However, the figures from the authority are seen as the most credible available because independent media and other organizations are generally not allowed into Gaza.
