Four dead in new US attack on "drug boat"
Four people have been killed in a US attack on a boat allegedly smuggling drugs in the eastern Pacific on Wednesday, reports the AP. It is the fourteenth such attack since September, and the death toll has now risen to at least 61 people.
The Trump administration claims that the boats belong to drug cartels and that the operations are aimed at stopping the flow of drugs to the United States.
Critics, however, say that little evidence has been presented and that the attacks may constitute violations of the laws of war.
Trump to take in a record 7,500 refugees next year
Donald Trump wants to only let 7,500 refugees into the United States next year. This is clear from documents that news agencies have seen.
The figure is not justified in more detail than that, but Reuters notes that it is the lowest figure ever. In a typical year, the White House allows hundreds of thousands of people to seek refuge from war and persecution in the United States; during Joe Biden's last year in office, 125,000 refugees were admitted, writes the AP.
The record-low figure does not come as a bolt from the blue. Both Reuters and the AP have previously reported on that figure, citing sources, and then also wrote that white South Africans should be prioritized.
