Russian invasion Negotiations

Russian statements cast doubt on Budapest meeting

The planned meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin may not happen as soon as many thought, if it happens at all, writes Politico. The site points to statements made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov after Monday's talks with his American counterpart Marco Rubio.

Russia's demands are unchanged and the country has no interest in meeting "signals" from Washington that the war in Ukraine should end with the current front lines. Lavrov also questioned how Putin will be able to fly to Hungary, since Poland has threatened to execute an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court if Putin flies through its airspace by forcing the plane down.

Trump has previously said that a meeting will probably take place within two weeks, but a White House source tells Reuters that there are no plans for a meeting in the near future.

Minister warns Putin against flying over Poland

Poland is warning Vladimir Putin that he could be forced to be arrested if he flies through Polish airspace on his way to meet Donald Trump in Hungary, Reuters reports.

– I cannot guarantee that an independent Polish court will not order the government to escort such an aircraft to hand over the suspect to the court in The Hague, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski tells Radio Rodzina.

Vladimir Putin has had an arrest warrant issued against him since 2023 and is accused of war crimes for illegally abducting hundreds of children from Ukraine.

Sources: Meeting between Lavrov and Rubio put on hold

The meeting between the US Secretary of State and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, which according to President Donald Trump was to take place before his meeting with Vladimir Putin in Hungary, has been put on hold, according to sources to CNN.

Why is not entirely clear, but according to one of the sources, Rubio and Lavrov have different views on how the war in Ukraine should end.

It is also unclear what impact a meeting between Rubio and Lavrov would have had on the meeting between Trump and Putin.

EU leaders: Borders must not be moved by force

"International borders must not be moved by force," reads a statement signed by Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders on Tuesday.

It comes at the same time as Trump is preparing to meet Putin in Hungary in the near future.

According to the Washington Post, in a conversation with Trump last week, Putin is said to have demanded the entire Donbas as part of a peace, something Trump commented on Sunday by saying that the region should be divided to end the war.

The statement supports Trump's position that the fighting should stop immediately.

"The current line of contact should be the starting point for the negotiations."
