Criticism of Louvre Security After Heist
There are many questions after yesterday's heist at the Louvre in Paris. How was it that burglars were able to break into one of the world's most visited art museums so easily? And in broad daylight?
Several French media outlets are highlighting shortcomings in the museum's security work as an explanation for why the thieves were able to strike. Le Monde reports that the plan to modernize the museum's security system has been postponed. In addition, a lack of resources has led to serious security shortcomings.
French Interior Minister Gerard Darmanin admits that there are security shortcomings at the Louvre and that this paved the way for the thieves.
- What is certain is that we have failed, he says on French radio, reports AFP.
No one has been arrested for the heist.
The Louvre remains closed – no arrests yet
The Louvre will remain closed on Monday after yesterday's heist, a museum spokesman said, Reuters reports.
Initially, the museum was expected to reopen later on Monday, with the exception of some parts. The museum says it regrets the circumstances.
Police have not yet made any arrests for the heist, which took place shortly after the museum opened on Sunday. The thieves are said to have used a crane to reach the first floor and broke open a window with an angle grinder.
The thieves are said to have taken jewelry from the Napoleon and Empress jewelry collection in the Apollo Gallery.
