Tourists flock to Sicily despite water crisis
The water crisis in Sicily is getting worse, The Guardian reports. As a result of climate change, 70 percent of Sicily is at risk of desertification, according to Italy's National Research Council.
In 2021, a European heat record of 48.8 degrees was measured, during the second half of 2023 only 150 millimeters of rain fell and in May this year Rome declared a state of emergency for Sicily.
At the same time, tourists continue to flock to the island.
- Tourists generally seek sun, regardless of lack of water. Water must be readily available. Overtourism increases the pressure on Sicily's already scarce water resources, which inevitably has consequences for the environment, says Christian Mulder, ecology and climate researcher at the University of Catania.
