New threat to NATO air base in Germany - security is increased
The NATO air base in Geilenkirchen in western Germany has sent home all non-essential personnel following intelligence reports of some kind of security threat. Security has been raised to "Charlie", which in NATO language is the second highest level, German media write.
According to Deutsche Welle, the definition of Charlie is that there is evidence indicating an imminent terrorist attack against the alliance. There is no concrete information on what the threat consists of, but the authorities claim that the level increase and the evacuation are being done for security reasons.
It is the second time in a short time that security threats have been reported from NATO's German air bases.

Advances in cancer research
The world's first vaccine against lung cancer begins testing
The world's first vaccine against lung cancer has now begun to be tested on patients, writes The Guardian. The Phase 1 trial – which is the first in humans of the BNT116 vaccine – is being conducted in over seven countries.
The vaccine, which is an mRNA vaccine, instructs the body to hunt down and kill cancer cells and prevent them from coming back. Unlike chemotherapy, healthy cells are left untouched and should thus strengthen a person's immune system.
- This technology is the next big phase for cancer treatment, says oncology professor Siow Ming Lee to the newspaper.
Lung cancer is one of the most dangerous types of cancer and leads to 1.8 million deaths every year. The chance of survival, in cases where the tumor has spread, is very low.

The violence in Haiti
Five children a week die or are injured in the gang war
Five children a week have been killed or injured in Haiti during the first half of the year, writes The Guardian. This when they were caught in the crossfire of gang conflicts, according to Save the Children.
Most of the children were hit in connection with armed gangs opening fire with machine guns. A small but growing number have also been targeted on suspicion of showing support for a local gang, a rival gang or the police.
- We lack words for the unimaginable suffering that children in Haiti are exposed to, says Chantal Sylvie Imbeault at Save the Children.
So far, 131 children have been killed or injured, according to Save the Children. This means an increase of 47 percent compared to the last six months of last year, when 89 cases were reported.
