WHO European Director: "Mpox is not the new covid"

Hans Kluge, head of Europe at the World Health Organization WHO, says the authorities know how to control the spread of mpox. He emphasized that the infectious viral disease, regardless of whether it is the old or the new variant, "is not the new covid". Reuters reports.

- We can and must tackle mpox together, he says at a press conference on Tuesday.

The European leader also called on the world's authorities to take measures to stop the spread.

"Traditional values" should stop mpox in Russia

Russia's "traditional values" will help the country avoid an outbreak of mpox. That's what Anna Popova, head of the health and consumer agency Rospotrebnadzor, says, according to the independent newspaper Moscow Times.

The contagious viral disease is spread through physical contact. The previous global outbreak mainly involved men who have sex with men. The new virus variant, clade 1, spreads to a greater extent through other contact routes.

- Considering how it spreads, I am absolutely sure that it is not dangerous or scary like an epidemic in Russia with our traditional values, she says.

Last year, the Russian Supreme Court classified the LGBTQI movement as "extremist". LGBTQI people in the country are portrayed as societal enemies and "the opposite of traditional values".
