American media evaluate Harris' suit
That Kamala Harris unexpectedly appeared at the Democratic National Convention last night wearing a light brown suit is causing strong reactions in the United States.
New York Times fashion editor Vanessa Friedman writes in an analysis that in the United States wearing a traditional, dark blue suit is seen as a sign of patriotism.
She believes that Kamala Harris undoubtedly remembers the uproar surrounding then-President Barack Obama wearing a suit in the same color during a press conference. Then Republicans raged and called the election "unpresidential". Obama himself seemed to enjoy the uproar and often returned in joking remarks to his choice.
Of course, none of this has escaped Kamala, writes Friedman, and continues:
"If she picks up the light brown baton, there must be a reason."
One reason, according to Friedman, could be to send subtle signals of affinity with Obama. He was America's first black president, she may be the second.
In The Guardian, Helen Sullivan writes that "it is a universal truth that a prominent female politician who owns a wardrobe will have her outfits scrutinized for clues about who she is". The choice can therefore also be a way of teasing.
"After her performance on Monday night, many are simply wondering: Is she conjuring?"

The trade union leader must not say: "No answer received"
At least five leaders of major US labor unions are speaking at the Democratic National Convention, which is underway in Chicago. But Åkeriarbetarna's powerful chairman Sean O'Brien is not invited, writes Axios.
- We received no response to our request to speak, says O'Brien's spokesperson Kara Deniz.
The trucking workers, who organize 1.3 million Americans, have historically supported the Democratic presidential candidate. During this year's election campaign, they have not announced that they stand behind any of the candidates.
In July, Sean O'Brien spoke at the Republican National Convention.

Analysis: Completely different Biden than during the disaster debate
Joe Biden spoke with a strong and clear voice in his farewell speech during the Democratic convention in Chicago. That's what The Guardian's David Smith writes in an analysis. The president gave a completely different impression than during the disastrous debate against Donald Trump in June, he notes.
Sky News' James Matthews makes the same analysis. Biden's performance was his best in months.
“It was Joe Biden's night, an opportunity to honor the old and welcome the new. It was emotional and the president himself looked teary-eyed at the end – not the end he wanted, but the end his party demanded.”
CNN's Stephen Collinson writes that Biden did what should be considered the highest of acts among politicians in democracies: voluntarily handing over power.
"Surrounded by the love of his party, President Joe Biden ultimately became a bridge to a new generation of leaders," he writes.

13 arrested after protests against the Democratic convention
Thirteen
people were arrested by police during the first day of the Democratic
National Convention, which began on Monday. CBS News reports.
Among those arrested are ten demonstrators who briefly managed to force the outer barriers around the convention center.
According
to Chicago Police's Larry Snelling, most of the protests were peaceful
and orderly, but a small group of "agitators" attacked the police,
throwing water bottles and pepper spray.
- Our officers did not overreact. We were able to clean up the area very quickly, says Snelling.
The
demonstrators protest, among other things, against what they describe
as the Democrats' participation in Israel's warfare in Gaza.
