Starmer: Europe must carry the heavy load in Ukraine

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is working with France to develop a possible peace plan for Ukraine.

– We will take those talks to the White House, he says at a press conference after Sunday's summit in London.

He says that several countries are ready to join a "coalition for peace" and says that Britain is willing to deploy peacekeeping forces and put fighter jets in the air, a plan that needs US support.

When asked if Europe can do without the US, Starmer replies that the US is a very important partner.

– I do not agree that the US is an unreliable partner. But Europe must carry the heavy load, he says.

Among those participating in the meeting were Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) and Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyj as well as the leaders of Britain, Italy, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Romania, the Czech Republic and Finland.

EU summit after the meeting: “We must arm quickly”

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says that good discussions were held during the summit in London, reports Reuters.

According to her, they talked, among other things, about a possible peace plan for Ukraine and what security guarantees should be offered to the country. She also says that it is of the utmost importance that EU countries stop saving on defense and sharply increase their defense budgets.

– We must rearm Europe quickly. Defense budgets must accelerate and the United States must know that we are ready to defend democracy, she says.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte says that after the meeting he has received promises that several NATO countries will increase their defense budgets, several media reports.
