North Korea crisis
Japan, China and South Korea want to safeguard peace on the Korean Peninsula
China,
Japan and South Korea have a shared responsibility to preserve peace on
the Korean Peninsula. The countries agreed during a foreign ministers'
meeting on Saturday, AFP reports.
The Korean issue was one of
several that the three countries discussed. Other topics included the
Taiwan issue, the situation in the South China Sea, the war in Ukraine,
climate change and the region's aging population.
The new US
tariff policy was also on the agenda. The countries also promised to
cooperate there. Patricia M Kim, a foreign policy expert at the
Brookings Institution in Washington, says the meeting has extra weight
in light of the US's new foreign policy position.
She says that China is now actively working to improve its relations with countries in its own region.

Gaza war
Fatah calls on Hamas to relinquish power over Gaza
The
Palestinian Fatah movement is calling on Hamas to relinquish power to
secure a future where there are still Palestinians in Gaza, reports AFP.
- Hamas must show compassion for Gaza, its children, women and men, says Fatah spokesman Monther al-Hayek.
He further says that Hamas must fully realize that continued fighting will lead to a Gaza without Palestinians.
The Fatah-controlled Palestinian Authority ruled Gaza until 2007 when the terrorist-designated Hamas took power.
The well-known double agent Oleg Gordievsky has died, reports the BBC.
Gordievsky is described as “the most important spy ever in the West” within Russian intelligence. He was recruited from the KGB and worked secretly for the British intelligence service MI6 for eleven years.
In 1977, Gordievsky said that the Soviet Union had managed to recruit a spy in Sweden, which would lead to the arrest of Stig Bergling.
Gordievsky’s most important contribution is considered to have been when he warned that the Soviet Union had become so paranoid about an imaginary nuclear attack from the West that they had begun preparing to strike first. The information caused Western leaders to tone down their rhetoric, which was the beginning of a de-escalation.
However, in 1985, suspicions were raised against Gordievsky in Moscow, and he managed to escape to Finland in the trunk of a car.
Gordievsky was 86 years old.
