EL PASO, TEXAS. The Supreme Court's announcement that it intends to test the question of whether Donald Trump is completely immune from prosecution is a major victory for the ex-president.

In practice, this likely means that the more important trial against Trump will not be held before the presidential election.

If he wins in November, Trump can make all the charges go away for good.

Most things seem to be going Trump' Trump's way right now.

He is on pace to sail toward his party's presidential nomination faster than any other non-incumbent candidate. By mid-March, he will have the number of candidates needed to have an unassailable lead over Nikki Haley before the Republican convention.

An even bigger bonus is that it is becoming less and less likely that several of the four trials against him will start before the presidential election.
The supreme Court must be apolitical and interpret the constitution. But it very much looks like HD is working as an election locomotive for Donald Trump.

Lower courts have unanimously ruled that Donald Trump is not immune from prosecution for criminal acts committed while he was president.

HD could have chosen not to take up the case. Then the decisions of the lower bodies had stood firm.

Instead, it was decided yesterday to take the case up for trial at the end of April. This means that a decision will probably come in June at the earliest. With just over four months left until the election.

It is probably not enough to get a trial in the prosecution that Trump tried to change the election results, among other things, by urging his supporters to storm Congress in January 2021.

Contributes to delay

It also likely means that the indictment that he took classified documents from the White House and stored them in his private home Mar-a-Lago in Florida is postponed.

It is only if HD determines that Trump is not immune that such a prosecution can proceed.

Most legal commentators here in the United States agree that HD cannot possibly conclude that a president is immune from all prosecutions, regardless of the nature of the crime. Which is exactly what Trump has been trying to achieve all along. His tactics are to delay all trials until after the presidential election. The charge of conspiracy to commit election fraud was actually supposed to begin on March 4. Now, it may not start until after the November 5 election.

If Trump wins and becomes president again, he can pardon himself or appoint an attorney general who will drop all charges.

Trump's chances in the presidential election increase if he is not convicted before the election. Opinion polls show that at least a third of Republican voters would hesitate to vote for Trump if he were convicted of a serious crime.

To add to the matter, during his four years as president, Donald Trump succeeded by a happy coincidence in appointing as many as three conservative judges who now serve for life. Thus, the court has a conservative majority of 6-3.

Charges are pending

Because they are appointed for life, the judges do not have to care what Trump thinks, but many still see the court's decision as support for the ex-president. And it's not the first time. The court's reputation is in sharp decline.

Trump can also be happy that the state prosecution in Georgia is hanging in the air.

There, Trump stands accused of trying to turn the 2020 Georgia election loss into a win by pressuring local officials to cheat.

But right now it is uncertain whether the prosecutor Fanni Willis will be allowed to continue pursuing the case. She has been in a relationship with another prosecutor she hired to help her on the case. Trump's lawyers claim that she benefited financially from it and thus should be removed.

Right now, a judge is considering the matter. He has already taken a very long time. An indication that Willis may be removed from the case. If so, it must be posted to another court in the state. In any case, this means a significant delay in a trial that would have started in August at the earliest anyway. In the best case for Trump, it could mean that the prosecution is dropped altogether.

Bought silence

The ex-president's trial for paying to buy a porn star's silence ahead of the 2016 presidential election appears to be proceeding as scheduled with jury selection on March 25 because the alleged crime was committed before Trump became president.

But that charge is the least serious of the four brought against Trump.

Which makes me think of a local activist I met in South Carolina about a week ago. He had nothing left for the ex-president but had his opinion clear.

- Trump will never be convicted of any crime and not have to pay a cent in fines. He is untouchable.

It is clear that many died and were injured when a large crowd gathered around 38 trucks with emergency aid. Hamas claims that Israel's IDF army fired shots into a crowd and that over 100 people died. They call it an Israeli "massacre". The IDF believes that Palestinians tried to loot the convoy and that many were trampled and driven to death when chaos broke out at the site. According to the IDF, "a few warning shots" were fired.

The United States and several European countries, including Sweden, also paused their payments after the Israeli accusations.

The EU opens the wallet again - gives huge support to Unrwa

The European Commission is to pay out 50 million euros to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) next week, they write in a press release.

Payments totaling 82 million euros were frozen after Israel accused twelve Unrwa employees of participating in the Hamas terrorist attack on 7 October. The remaining 32 million is to be paid out in two installments later, as Unrwa implements certain measures.

In addition to the frozen money, the Commission pushes for an additional EUR 68 million in support for 2024. The total support this year will thus be EUR 150 million, almost SEK 1.7 billion.

EU öppnar plånboken igen – ger jättestöd till Unrwa

EU-kommissionen ska betala ut 50 miljoner euro till FN:s hjälporganisation för Palestinaflyktingar (Unrwa) nästa vecka, skriver man i ett pressmeddelande.

Utbetalningar på totalt 82 miljoner euro frystes efter att Israel anklagat tolv Unrwa-anställda för att ha deltagit i Hamas terrordåd den 7 oktober. Kvarvarande 32 miljoner ska betalas ut i två omgångar längre fram, i takt med att Unrwa genomför vissa åtgärder.

Utöver de frysta pengarna skjuter kommissionen till ytterligare 68 miljoner euro i stöd för 2024. Det totalt stödet i år blir därmed 150 miljoner euro, nästan 1,7 miljarder kronor.

The Chinese giant BYD has overtaken Tesla as the world's best-selling electric car manufacturer. However, the change of throne has not been noticed in Sweden, reports TT.

Tesla's new registrations in Sweden increased by over 200 percent in January compared to the same month last year, according to statistics from Mobility Sweden.

Musk sues Open AI: "Puts profit before the good of humanity"

Elon Musk is suing Open AI because the billionaire believes the company violated the agreement to develop AI technology for the benefit of humanity, not for profit. That's according to a lawsuit filed in a San Francisco court.

According to the filing, CEO Sam Altman and Open AI violate the company's original idea of serving humanity before profits. Musk believes that Open AI's source code has been closed and that the company has now "de facto become a subsidiary of the world's largest tech company: Microsoft".

"Under their new board, they are not only developing, but also refining, an AGI to maximize profit for Microsoft, rather than for the good of humanity," it says, among other things.

Musk believes that Open AI should return to an open source code and that the tech company and Microsoft should be prevented from using the technology to make profits.

Musk was one of the early financiers of Open AI and believes that the original idea for the company was to have a non-profit structure.

The grandsons of Disney founders Walt and brother Roy back CEO Bob Iger and the board's work in two open letters addressed to shareholders. At the same time, they give a boot to activist investors who have recently flocked to the stock, writes Reuters.

"Iger has made this company grow in a modern world and he continues to balance creativity and profit," the letters say, among other things.

Navalny's death

Russian regime critic Alexei Navalny's body has left the church and been taken to the Borisovskoye cemetery after his supporters said goodbye in Moscow, several media reports. The funeral itself will be held later this afternoon.  

 

Security is heavy with police equipped with helmets and tear gas. According to media reports, several people have been arrested. According to Navalny's spokesperson Kira Jarmysh, people at the church chanted his name and the words "you were not afraid and we are not afraid."  

 

Russian President Vladimir Putin has not yet commented on the opposition politician's death. According to the Moscow Times, the Kremlin said on Friday that it "has nothing to say" to Navalny's relatives.

The police presence is large when the Russian regime critic Alexei Navalny is buried in Moscow today, two weeks after he died in a penal colony in Siberia. Pictures show how riot fences have been set up in several places in Moscow and how heavily armed police guard the area around the Chovanskoye cemetery from the roof.  

 

Already before the funeral, hundreds of people have been arrested around Russia after they wanted to honor the opposition politician. Martin Kragh at the Foreign Policy Institute tells TT that Navalny supporters will probably appear at the ceremony. But there won't be any major demonstrations.  

 

- Certainly they will try to prevent larger crowds from forming, says Kragh.  

 

The funeral takes place at 12 noon, Swedish time.

EL PASO, TEXAS. The battle for the wall took on a new dimension today as President Joe Biden and Donald Trump visited the US southern border on the same day and addressed their supporters.

With the timing of his visit, Biden is trying to wrest the migration issue out of Trump's grasp and show American voters that he is doing something about the record-breaking illegal immigration.

Almost all news channels broadcast live from the border visits. Often with a so-called split screen where you could see Biden and Trump dueling at the respective border section.

In an opinion poll reported by the television channel CNN, 28 percent of Americans say that migration is the most important election issue. Clearly more important than both the economy and inflation.

After visiting the border area here in El Paso yesterday, I can understand their concern. They see daily on television images how hundreds of refugees and migrants apparently easily enter the United States despite the fact that there is an eight-meter high wall in place to stop them and now also barbed wire in some places and other obstacles that can cause serious personal injuries.

Nevertheless, a record number manage to enter the country and seek asylum or simply disappear through openings in the wall or by climbing over rope ladders in less well-guarded parts of the border.

What is happening gives an impression of chaos that reminds not a little of when ten thousand people a day entered Sweden during the great refugee crisis of 2015.

The bill to the taxpayers

When Donald Trump was elected president in 2016, his big campaign promise was to build a wall against Mexico. At all election meetings he asked the rhetorical question "who will pay for the wall?". The audience enthusiastically chanted "Mexico" as Trump promised to make the neighbor pay.

In reality, Trump did not build many miles of new wall. Instead, he replaced the four-meter-high wall that Obama had built in 2013-14 with a twice as high and more high-tech version.

The bill, contrary to Trump's promises, had to be paid for by American taxpayers.

Last year was a record year when 2.3 million illegal migrants were registered at the border. There are far more than those who came during Trump's presidency. Trump's wall, which was completed only at the end of his term in office, has not succeeded in stopping immigration.

Biden has been heavily criticized for not doing more to secure the border. In particular, stop the smuggling of the drug fentanyl that kills so many Americans every year.

The Supreme Court recently ruled that Texas must allow border guards to cut the barbed wire if needed to do their job. Even so, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has put up even more barbed wire in other places like here in El Paso.

Trump sees the border and migration as his most important election issue and biggest chance to defeat Biden.

So much so that he recently pressured Republicans in Congress to vote no more money for border security because he wants to let the border chaos continue until the election as a weapon against Biden.

"Mass Invasion"

- Only I can stop Biden's illegal mass invasion, Trump claimed during his visit to Eagle Pass.

If elected, he promises to deport migrants in unprecedented numbers. Something that is easier said than done.

During the day, I met Karina Breceda, who runs a shelter for pregnant women who crossed the border into El Paso. I think she hit the nail on the head when she described Biden and Trump's visit to the border as "political theater" that won't solve anything.

But the decisive factor will be how the voters perceive it. Today, a majority has greater confidence in Trump when it comes to stopping the "invasion".
