Quick version
- Russia has tested a new hypersonic robot, the Oreshnik, with nuclear capability that Putin claims cannot be stopped.
- Putin and Russia's defense chief are threatening Europe and NATO with new weapons that they believe will make them defenseless.
- NATO and Ukraine are planning a crisis meeting to discuss Russia's latest robot attack and the new nuclear doctrine.
Putin and his military leaders threaten Europe in a televised meeting in the Kremlin.
Russia's new test weapon leaves NATO defenseless, they claim.
- No way to stop it exists in the world, says the president.
Russia attacked the Ukrainian city of Dnipro with a newly developed nuclear-capable ballistic robot on Thursday night.
- The test was a success, Putin says at a meeting in the Kremlin on Friday with his top defense officials.
- We will continue with the tests, even under combat conditions.
"Like a nuclear attack"
The launch of the new hypersonic Oreshnik robot was, according to Putin, a response to Ukraine's Ukraine's first use of US and UK robots against Russian territory.
They have also adopted a new nuclear weapons doctrine where the threshold for using nuclear weapons has been lowered.
During the meeting, Sergei Karakayev, head of Russia's strategic robotic forces, said that "the results of the launch showed the successful development" of the robotic system.
He also said the robot has the capacity to strike targets across Europe.
- A massive use of this weapon is comparable to an attack with nuclear weapons, said Karakayev.

"Can't be stopped"
Putin ordered the Ministry of Defense to put the ballistic robot into serial production.
The president claims that no other country in the world has a weapon like the Oreshnik and that it cannot be prevented from achieving its stated goal.
- No way to stop it exists in the world, says Putin.
Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia's National Security Council, also threatened NATO with attacks on Friday.
- If the escalation continues, we cannot rule anything out because the NATO countries have basically joined the war, says Medvedev in an interview with the TV channel Al Arabiya, according to the Russian news agency Tass.
Terror weapon
He believes that the countries in the West must understand that they are a warring party.
- They don't just fight by giving them weapons and aid. They are directly involved in military operations by identifying targets in Russia and guiding American and European robots, Medvedev said.
- They fight against Russia. So nothing can be ruled out.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi calls the Russian test launch "an international crime".
- To not only terrorize another country but also to use it to test a terrorist weapon is an international crime, he says according to The Guardian.
Crisis meeting during "decisive phase"
NATO and Ukraine are to hold a crisis meeting on Tuesday next week to discuss the attack.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Friday that the war had entered a "decisive phase of dramatic dimensions", writes The Guardian.
However, the Pentagon has partially downplayed the significance of the Russian attack and states that it does not fundamentally change the conditions.
It is stated that Russia only has "a handful" of the dreaded robots.

Ukraine and NATO are due to meet for talks next week, following Russia's latest attack with a new hypersonic robot.
According to information to AFP, the ambassadors of the NATO countries are to meet within the framework of the military alliance's Ukraine Council during the next week. It is within that council that NATO's support to Ukraine is coordinated with its government.
It is believed to have been a newly developed ballistic robot with nuclear weapon capability that crashed in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. Ukraine first spoke of an attack with an intercontinental robot, but it seems to have been rather a new variant, with a slightly shorter interregional range.
- This is the second time they have escalated the war this year. Now they used a (ballistic) robot. We are working on developing our air defense, says Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umjerov to TT at a press conference.
According to Umzherov, the first escalation involved the North Korean soldiers who are now fighting on the Russian side.
The robot crashed into a residential building and caused a fire, with no casualties. The use is seen as an escalation in light of Russia's adoption of a new nuclear doctrine where the threshold for using nuclear weapons has been lowered.
President Vladimir Putin, who rarely comments on the progress of the war, gave a speech on Thursday evening in which he said that Russia feels "justified" to attack countries that donate advanced weapons to Ukraine with permission to target them against Russia.
The other day, Ukraine fired advanced American and British robots across the border for the first time.
