Several embassies close - Ukraine tries to calm dow
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry is trying to pour oil on the waves after several countries closed their embassies in Kyiv, the BBC reports.
The US, Spain, Italy and Greece have all announced temporary embassy closures due to what the US calls "specific information about a potentially significant airstrike". Spain has since reopened its embassy.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry says that the threat is "as relevant as in the past thousand days", and that it is "psychological warfare" from Russia.
- We believe that our partners should react the same way on the 1001st day, says spokesperson Heorhij Tychyj.
US closes embassy in Kyiv after reports of attack
The US has received information about a possible "significant" Russian attack in Kyiv and is therefore closing its embassy in the Ukrainian capital on Wednesday. Reuters reports.
"Embassy personnel have been instructed to take cover. American citizens are requested to immediately seek shelter if the flight siren sounds," writes the embassy in a statement.
The decision comes after Russia promised to respond to the first Ukrainian attack on Russian territory with US long-range weapons.

Storm Shadow fired at Russia for the first time
Ukraine has for the first time fired British Storm Shadow robots at targets in Russia, according to Bloomberg and The Guardian.
Britain has not publicly confirmed that it has given Ukraine permission to use the long-range robot in Russia. After the US this week gave the green light to the use of the ATACMS system, however, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, among other things, that Kyiv must be given the "strongest possible position" in the war.
It is not clear which goals apply. Starmer does not want to comment on the data, according to Reuters.

Expert: The front in eastern Ukraine may collapse
There is a risk that the Ukrainian eastern front "could actually collapse" if Russian advances continue at their current rate. This is what Marina Miron, a defense analyst at the British Kings College, tells the BBC.
According to data from the ISW think tank, Russia has taken six times as much land in Ukraine in 2024 as in all of 2023, and its forces are now closing in on several key logistical hubs in Donbas.
At the same time, the Russians are taking back more and more land in Ukrainian-occupied Kursk. The Ukrainian offensive was an outcome of "tactical brilliance", but has now become a "strategic disaster", according to Miron.
- The idea was to get a political hold on negotiations and divert Russian troops from Donbas. Now we see instead that Ukrainian forces are tied up there.
