Sources: Shocked even those closest to him – few knew
The idea that the US could take over Gaza, permanently relocate its residents to neighboring countries and build the Gaza Strip into a “Middle Eastern Riviera” emerged in the White House recently, sources told the Wall Street Journal.
According to the same sources, President Donald Trump is said to have tossed the idea around with a handful of his closest advisers in recent days, before presenting the vision at last night’s press conference.
The move even surprised some of his most devoted Jewish supporters, according to the sources. The newspaper writes about a pro-Israel donor who has supported Trump for many years, whose first reaction to the move was to call the idea “crazy”.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – who stood next to Trump when the vision was presented – applauded the American president’s ability to “think outside the box”.
– This is something that could change history and it is worth really investigating, he said during the press conference.
According to the news site Ynet, plans to “encourage migration” of the Palestinian population of the Gaza Strip have been discussed high up in Israel’s leadership for several months, writes TT.
Gazabo: Trump can go to hell – we will not leave
Gaza residents are furious with Donald Trump after his move to move residents to neighboring countries, take over the area and turn it into the “Middle Eastern Riviera”.
– Trump can go to hell, with his ideas, his money and his beliefs. We are going nowhere, Samir Abu Basel, who lives in Gaza City, told Reuters.
If Trump wants to resolve the conflict, he should instead move the Israelis to one of the US states, the father of five added, according to Sky News.
Um Tamer Jamal, 65, tells Reuters that the family will refuse to leave the area.
Rubio on Gaza Offer: Not Hostile
Donald Trump's offer to relocate the entire population of Gaza and transform the area into the "Middle Eastern Riviera" has been misunderstood. This is what US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said during a press conference in Guatemala City, according to the AP.
- It was not intended as a hostile move. It was intended as, I think, a very generous move.
According to Rubio, Trump's offer consists of rebuilding Gaza. Critics have said that it would involve ethnic cleansing of the area.
