Canada wants to join the EU's rearmament project
Canada wants to join the EU's huge rearmament project "Armor Europe" to reduce dependence on the United States. This is what Prime Minister Mark Carney tells the public service channel CBC.
- 75 cents of every dollar we spend on our defense goes to the United States. It's not smart, he says.
Carney says he would like to join Canada in the project, which the EU is expected to spend the equivalent of over 12,000 billion kronor over the next five years, just in time for Sweden's National Day on July 1.
Yesterday, Donald Trump offered Canada free protection for his planned air defense project "Golden Dome" if the country becomes a US state.
EU is rearming in the Black Sea to meet the Russian threat
The EU presented a new security strategy for the Black Sea on Wednesday to meet the threat from Russia, several media outlets report.
– An active EU role is crucial to promote security and peace in the Black Sea region, especially in view of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, says Commission President Ursula von der Leyen according to AFP.
The plan proposes a new “maritime security hub” in cooperation with Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan. The exchange of information between the countries will become “Europe’s warning system in the Black Sea”, according to the Union’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
Underwater sensors and drones are proposed to monitor cables and energy infrastructure. In addition, the plan is to upgrade ports, railways and roads in the region to be able to transport soldiers and military equipment if necessary.

Cholera outbreak in Sudan – 70 dead in two days
A cholera outbreak has broken out in the Sudanese capital Khartoum. In the past two days, 70 people have died, the state’s health ministry announced, AFP reports.
The rapid spread of the disease follows intensive drone attacks earlier in May, which knocked out large parts of the water and electricity supply in the capital. The government blames the RSF paramilitary group for the attacks.
The cholera outbreak is worsening the already overburdened health system in Sudan after two years of war between government forces and the RSF.
