Study shows: Human factor behind summer heat wave

Published 2025-08-14 13.08

We humans are the ones who contributed to this summer's heat wave.

This is shown by a new report by WWA, which also says that similar heat will become more common.

- Our estimate is that the heat wave was about two degrees warmer than it would have been without climate change, says a climate scientist at a press conference.

Sweden was not alone in being hit by an intense heat wave in July.

In Namsskogan and Gartland in Norway, temperatures reached 30 degrees and more for more than 13 days in a row.

In Ylitornio in Finland, the maximum temperature was above 25 degrees for 26 days in a row.

The Swedish Meteorological Agency SMHI issued several warnings for heat in the north during the summer.

Now a new study from World Weather Attribute, WWA, shows that it will be even warmer, and more common with heat waves like these in the future.

Two degrees warmer – due to climate change

The report shows that it is the human factor that has contributed to climate change that has made it several degrees warmer than normal.

– Our estimate is that the heat wave was about two degrees warmer than it would have been without climate change, says Amalie Skålevåg, climate scientist at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute at a press conference with WWA.

This heat wave was unusual, according to the authors of the study.

If global warming continues, heat waves will be five times more common and 1.4 degrees warmer in Sweden, Norway and Finland by 2100, WWA's analysis shows.

In the study, drownings are an example of a risk that comes with the heat, when people simply try to find ways to cool themselves. This summer,  31 people have died due to drowning.
