Tariff crisis Trump's tariff policy

Trump rages after ruling: "A disaster for the country"

Donald Trump rages on social media after an appeals court ruled that most of the president's trade tariffs are illegal. In a long post on Truth Social, Trump writes, among other things, that it would be a "total disaster for the country" if the tariffs were removed.

"If this decision stands, it would literally destroy the United States," he writes.

According to the court, the tariffs can remain in place until October 14 so that the case can be appealed to the Supreme Court. Trump suggests that an appeal is expected.

"With the help of the United States Supreme Court, we will use them to our country's advantage and make America rich, strong and powerful again," he writes about the tariffs.

The setback for Trump: Most of the tariffs are illegal

Most of Donald Trump's trade tariffs are illegal, a US appeals court in Washington DC ruled on Friday evening, according to Reuters.

Both the "reciprocal" tariffs against nearly 60 countries plus the EU that were announced in early April, and the tariffs against China, Canada and Mexico that were introduced in February are rejected. However, the court will not rule on other tariffs, such as those on steel and aluminum.

According to the appeals court, the tariffs can remain in place until October 14 so that the case can be appealed to the US Supreme Court, something the White House is expected to do.

This spring, a lower court ruled that the tariffs were illegal.

The decision undermines President Trump's use of tariffs as a central tool in trade policy, Reuters notes
